It’s National Liver Awareness Month! Did you know that the liver weighs 3 pounds? An adult’s liver is about the size of a football! It is found at the right of your belly and is protected by the rib cage. The liver holds a vital function in your body — it cleans and filters the chemicals and toxins in our blood. It is what keeps our bloodstream clean and healthy. Show it some love by following some tips for better liver health.

Apart from filtering the blood from our digestive tract, the liver also produces bile — a digestive juice that absorbs fat from our blood. The liver also takes carbohydrates and turns it into a backup energy source. This organ is definitely a multitasker! Can you imagine living without a liver? The toxins, which are poisons to our body, would build up!  With that being said, here are some great ways to keep your liver in good shape.

Make sure you look into your BMI to ensure that you are not overweight or obese. Excess body fat, especially in the abdominal area, can add to the risk of a fatty liver. 

Fortunately, you can reverse a fatty liver when you control your diet. Studies have shown that a decrease in fatty liver scores was achieved when the daily calorie count of overweight adults was reduced. 

What is weight loss without exercise? Aerobic and strength exercises can help you lose excess fat on all parts of your body, including the fatty liver. If you already have a healthy weight, it’s still no excuse to skip exercise. Some of us may be in great shape yet have excess abdominal fat.

If you live a sedentary lifestyle, it may be time to leave that couch! Start small and consistently build an exercise routine. Do not pressure yourself to go big. Start by doing more chores around the house, opting for the stairs instead of the elevator, or brisk walking outside. Once you get used to moving, set a moderate physical activity weekly for 2 ½ hours to 5 hours. There are a lot of workouts you can do! Choose something you like so you can stick with it.

We always hear this phrase when we watch liquor commercials but, let’s admit it, it is frequently overlooked. Our liver may filter our blood, but it can only filter a small amount of alcohol. Excess alcohol intake can make our livers inflamed and scarred, which can eventually turn into a condition called liver cirrhosis.

Maybe it’s time to cut back on your favorite beer or say no to that extra order of liquor. The recommended amount of alcohol intake per day is 1 to 2 drinks. Drinking more than that is considered excessive and may be bad for your liver.

Avoid Breathing In Toxins

The liver works hard by filtering the toxins out of our blood. But too much of something is not good. Harmful chemicals that emanate from pesticides, cleaning products, industrial chemicals, and cigarettes can lead to liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. 

Wear protective gear like masks and gloves when handling toxic chemicals. If you are a smoker, you know that there are many reasons to quit, and liver disease may be one of them.
