By Allyson Sy |April 2020

Improving your immune system to have a healthy lifestyle is your first line of defense. Taking care of your immune system will help protect your body from harmful substances, germs, and viruses that could make you ill. Without a healthy immune system, harmful things like disease-causing germs, like bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi may enter your body with no way to fight it. Since it is a system, for it to function well, it has to maintain a balance and harmony. So how can you boost your immune system? Do you need to change your diet? Take a certain vitamin? Change your lifestyle into a healthier one?

Since we are still waiting for the cure or vaccine against the coronavirus or COVID-19, protecting yourself by practicing cleanliness and improving your immune system with these healthy-living strategies is the way to go.

1. Exercise

Regular exercise is one of your main sources of strength. It boosts cardiovascular health, lowers your blood pressure, helps you control your body weight, and protects your body against a variety of diseases. Finding the right time seems to be possible right now because of the Enhanced Community Quarantine. Consider alternating between walking or walking in place and strength training. Trade in those 15 or 30 minute Netflix time with an exercise instead!

2. Eat a Diet High in Fruits and Vegetables

Giving your body certain foods may help keep your immune system strong. Citrus fruits such as grapefruit, oranges and lemons can help increase the production of your white blood cells. Red bell peppers also contain vitamin C but twice as much as citrus fruits! For vegetables, better get munching on those Broccolis as it is supercharged with vitamins A, C, and E and minerals.

4. Get Enough Sleep

Along with exercising, a good night’s sleep is essential for your good health, for keeping you alert and energetic, and for building your body’s defenses against infection, chronic illness, and even heart disease. Setting a regular bedtime, minimizing your time with your phones, tablets and electronic devices can help you have a better sleep. In the morning, it is better to keep a constant routine by waking up at the same time every day of the week, also stick to a regular schedule for exercise, meals and other activities.

5. Take Steps to Avoid Infection

One of the easiest ways to keep yourself and your family healthy is by washing your hands as often as possible especially in these times to avoid the spread of bacteria and viruses. Washing your hands with soap rather than just washing it with water will totally kill off the germs especially if you wash it for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, you can use hand sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol, while alcohol-based disinfecting solutions should be at least 70% alcohol.

Closing Remarks

By following these simple ways, you could keep your immune system healthy to prevent infections and diseases such as the coronavirus or COVID-19. Exercising, getting enough sleep, consuming nutritious foods are the most important ways to bolster your immune system.
